Something I have been thinking a lot recently. When it comes to changing our habits to better environmental friendly option there is a trend of false good ideas.
Let's take the example of straws:
Nowadays we are told to stop using plastic straws and replace them by other options. This is just consumerism finding a way to sell use something else instead.
Stopping the use of plastics straws is good but is replacing it by metal straw better?
Stainless steel is extracted from the ground and thus does not solve any problem. It is replacing one problem by another. It is extracted from different sources such as limestone, iron ore and coal. All those processes mean destroying the ground to extract it like the destruction of limestone hills in Malaysia.
The solution:
Either drink directly from the glass like we use to do or use better alternative like bamboo straw only if needed (for special drinks like milkshake or ice blended). Bamboo is fast growing crop and the straw in the end 100% biodegradable.
Solutions exist but we need to think about all the option offered, in the end it is all about consumerism more than helping the environment. Less is always better.
